3 Essential Tips to Support Vein Health

While vein disease is complex and each patient is unique, there are a variety of treatments and techniques available to anyone suffering from the pain and discomfort of vein disease. From experience at the vein center of St. Joseph Medical Center and as a physician at Vein Clinics of America, I have seen the effects of vein disease throughout my entire career.

More than 80 million people suffer from vein disease across the country, and many avoid treatment for fear of major surgery. Ignoring the disease can result in symptoms such as pain, fatigue, itching, burning, and swelling; it may also result in throbbing and restlessness to the point where you feel the need to constantly move your legs. Luckily, minimally invasive treatments are the best option as they are more comfortable, convenient and the most effective.

While vein disease has a large genetic component and cannot be avoided in its entirety, there are a few tricks to aid in the prevention of varicose veins:

  1. Be active throughout the day. Being active is essential to increasing blood circulation, especially if you sit at a desk. Good blood circulation allows tissues to take in nutrients and get rid of waste, and is an essential function for long-term leg health and strength. Try setting an alarm on your phone once an hour to remind yourself to move around.
  1. Wear supportive footwear. While high heels can be worn on special occasions, flat footwear puts less strain on your blood vessels and encourages more activity throughout the day.
  1. Make your health a priority. Your health is very important in the prevention of vein disease. Remember to drink at least 8 glasses of water throughout the day, eat at least 5-9 servings of fruits or vegetables and include both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities in everyday life.

These tips can help mitigate the risk factors for vein disease from prolonged standing, sitting and excessive weight.  If you already are experiencing pain from vein disease, there are a few tricks to help increase blood flow, such as massaging your calves before going to bed or positioning a pillow under your legs to elevate and increase circulation while watching TV or reading a book.
