February: American Heart Month

February 9, 2015

February is American Heart Month, and Vein Clinics of America wants to take the time today to offer pointers for better heart health.  There are many things that you can begin today that will promote a healthier heart and will hopefully become positive lifestyle habits.  The American Heart Association, in partnership with Go Red For Women, offer the following tips:

  1. Choose a healthy lifestyle – your diet, weight, physical activity and exposure to tobacco smoke all affect your cholesterol level and heart disease risk.
  2. Know your fats – the first step to lowering your risk of heart disease is knowing which fats raise LDL cholesterol and which ones do not. Be sure to understand the difference between good fat and bad fat.
  3. Cook heart-healthy – make meals that are low in saturated fat and low in cholesterol. This will help you to manage your blood cholesterol level and reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.
  4. Understand drug therapy options – your doctor may prescribe medication. Learn about the different types of cholesterol-lowering drugs and tips for taking medications.
  5. Avoid common misconceptions – knowledge is key when it comes to improving your health. Learn about common myths versus facts about stroke, understand the different types of cholesterol, and be aware of the new heart health guidelines.
  6. Work with your doctor – know how to talk with your doctor about your cholesterol levels and be sure that you understand all of the instructions that you are given.
