How to Do Summer with Varicose Veins

If you’re struggling with varicose vein issues, then chances are good you’re not wanting to show off those legs this summer.

Though others may or may not notice, we are guessing you’re feeling a bit on the shy side about those bulging veins showing.

And we don’t blame you.

Though, you shouldn’t merely be thinking about the cosmetic side of your varicose veins because if you see them on the outside, that can mean there is far more going on underneath the surface.

While for some people varicose veins are only a cosmetic issue, it is important you err on the safe side and make sure your vein issues do not run deeper.

So, if you’ve got varicose veins on the mind this summer, here is how you can deal with it so you can make the best of this time of the year, get out there and enjoy the sunshine.

Prepare for travel

If you’re heading on a plane, a train, or into an automobile for your summer adventures, then you are going to want to prep for the long journey ahead.

By sitting still for too long of a time, you run the risk of your circulation suffering and your varicose veins becoming even worse.

If traveling by plane or train, there are a couple things you can do:

  1. If you can, pay extra for a seat with room for you to stretch your legs out
  2. Get up and walk around during the flight to get blood flowing again
  3. Pump your foot up and down making your calf muscle flex and relax
  4. Wear loose clothing
  5. Wear compression stockings
  6. Drink lots of water

Adjust your clothing

Though we think you should rock your bathing suit if you want to, we understand that some people are self-conscious about their varicose veins and would rather not have them on display.

If you fall into the latter category and want to be able to hide your varicose veins, be sure you don’t put them through the agony of tight clothing. The tighter your clothes, the more your circulation will be restricted.

Instead, opt for something light-weight, light-colored, and loose fitting that is light and breezy and will not restrict blood flow to any of your veins, especially your damaged ones.

Get outside

With the warmer weather comes more opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. So why not kill two birds with one stone and do some walking this summer?

This is a great way to get your circulation moving and keep your veins happy and healthy.

You can also try out cycling and other low-impact exercises outdoors that will make you feel like you’re still able to enjoy summer without your veins getting in the way.

Stay hydrated

Drink more water.

In the summer, the weather is hotter which means you will be sweating more. This in turn means that your body is losing more liquid, so you are going to want to step up the amount of water you’re drinking.

Aim to keep water on you at all times and drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water a day.

Find some shade

We all love a good summer tan, but too much time in the sun can actually damage your veins. Though the sun itself doesn’t damage your veins, sun does make the temperature of your skin increase, which can cause your blood vessels to dilate or get better . And, you guessed it — this can aggravate your varicose veins.

So, enjoy a bit of the sun, but know when it’s time to duck under the umbrella or head inside.

Try to eat the right food

Maintaining a healthy diet and weight means that you are steering clear of one of the leading causes of varicose veins: obesity.

Here are the types of foods you could eat to keep your veins happy and healthy:

Foods rich in fiber

  • Popcorn
  • Oatmeal
  • Brown rice
  • Leafy greens
  • Chia
  • Lentils

Foods low in sodium

Foods rich in vitamin C

  • Broccoli
  • Strawberries
  • Cauliflower
  • Pineapple
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Oranges
  • Bell peppers

Foods rich in vitamin E

  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Avocados
  • Olive oil
  • Pumpkin
  • Mangos
  • Fish
