Hygge: The Wellness Trend Encouraging Relaxation and Comfort

Hygge (pronounced hoo-guh): The feeling of coziness, comfort, well-being, and contentment that encourages one to enjoy life’s simple pleasures.[1]

Chances are that you may have heard of this wellness trend, but what does it actually entail? Considering “hygge” doesn’t have a direct translation in English, many people use the words cozy, charm, happy, content, relaxation, comfort and simple to describe this Danish way of life.  While hygge means something different for everyone, a common scenario is the feeling you get from wearing your most comfortable lounge clothes, cuddling up by a fire and sipping hot tea.

People tend to shy away from introducing hygge into their regular routines because of the misconception that it promotes unproductivity. In reality, it can be self-care at its finest. Hygge gives you the opportunity to focus and enjoy the present moment. It offers a creative and simple approach to obtaining the happiness you strive for by rejuvenating your body, mind, and soul. It can help restore your mindset about your overarching goals and could even assist you in reaching those intentions.[2]

Incorporating hygge into your routine can be easy, and the great thing about it is that it doesn’t have to cost you anything. Instead, the most difficult aspect of hygge is finding the moments in your busy day to stop and be present.

Here are a few simple, and relaxing, ways to add hygge into your life:

  • Sit in your favorite comfy chair every morning and savor your cup of coffee.
  • Light a candle and take a quiet Sunday morning bubble bath.
  • Switch your cell phone off and read your favorite book before bed.
  • Mindfully indulge in your favorite comfort food for dinner.
  • Cuddle up and watch a movie you’ve been wanting to see.

As with most things, balance is key. Hygge all day, every day, will probably not help you achieve the overall health and wellness goals you’ve set for yourself; however, adding small moments of hygge into your everyday routine offer an opportunity to hit the refresh button for your mind and body.
